| This experiential learning course will explore the history and latest innovations in financial inclusion which has evolved as an industry from microfinance, through the eyes of low-income households in developing countries. Students will gain knowledge in their financial needs and the strategies they use to manage financial risk through analysis of financial diaries and through forming an in-class informal savings and credit group. They will also participate in a simulation of a microentrepreneur, explore the differences between formal and informal financial services by conducting a field-based financial landscape analysis in Charlottesville, apply financial inclusion tools for product design and evaluation, design and pitch national financial education strategies and engage in debates about the role of government and donors, technology and the business case and impact of financial inclusion. |

| This is a practical course on fundraising for undergraduates. Participants will get an overview of fundraising theories and strategies and apply what they learn to raise money that another class at Batten will give away through a grant process. The beneficiaries of the grants are local nonprofits focused on one of three key areas: health, hunger, and housing. |

| This discussion-based course focuses on a historical examination of child poverty, including the multi-layer effects of poverty on a child’s development. Students will discuss school reform efforts, such as “turnaround†schools, charter schools, implications of No Child Left Behind and the Every Student Succeeds Act, and teacher evaluations. Further, the barriers that have contributed to the failure of previous reform initiatives—barriers that include social isolation, violence, and the educational system itself—will be identified and analyzed in-depth. |

| This course examines the past, present, and future of war, focusing especially on conventional deterrence theory and its applicability to contemporary American foreign policy. We will begin with a thorough review of existing theory, proceeding chronologically from deterrence theory before Hiroshima through the Cold War and Global War on Terror. We will then critically examine the applicability of conventional deterrence theory to contemporary American foreign policy and defense strategy. In particular, we will focus on the value of existing theory to the contemporary strategic environment, as well as the extent to which conventional deterrence theory affects American strategic decisions regarding force sufficiency, posture, and readiness. |

| This course offers an opportunity to learn about the structure and function of the US health care system. Lectures and classroom discussions will cover the history and current status of the education and delivery systems, including comparison with systems in other nations. Topics will include the challenges that face current and future leaders, providers, patients, and policy makers as health care becomes more effective and more expensive. Issues related to manpower, financing, access, disparities, and developing technology will be examined, with discussion of approaches to understanding and addressing significant problems and opportunities. |
