 LPPP 3250 Global Development Policy
18911 001Lecture (3)Open 36 / 40Katie StraightTuTh 11:00am - 12:15pmMonroe Hall 111
This course introduces students to standard theories of development economics and explores how current trends in the global economy challenge those theories and existing policies. Focusing on the macro and micro-economic challenges facing governments in developing countries and the global institutions that attempt to assist them, we will work together to grapple with some of the key questions that mark our time: Why have some countries escaped poverty, while others have failed to do so or seen poverty worsen? What role do governments, aid agencies, and private sector actors play in alleviating poverty? This course will explore the intersection of theory and practice as we assess the challenges of policy formation and implementation and learn from guest practitioners engaged in development across a variety of sectors.

20339 001Lecture (3)Closed 12 / 12Elana DeLozierTu 3:30pm - 6:00pmPavilion VIII 103
Becoming a specialist in a country or functional topic takes years to master and few are given a roadmap on how to do it. Taught by a top Yemen and Gulf specialist who has two decades experience as a political analyst in the US and abroad, this course will teach students the skill sets necessary to get up to speed on a topic quickly and to ultimately become an expert. In an apprentice-style format, students will choose a speciality then learn how to collect knowledge, detect logical fallacies and bias, interview people on the ground and experts, assess credibility, organize their thinking, formulate and write analysis, brief decisionmakers, give a media interview, and self-edit. The course seeks to make students more objective, accurate, confident, and informative in their research, analysis, writing, and briefing.
