| Nonprofit organizations in the United States play a critical intermediary role between government and citizens. They implement significant portions of social policy, they educate policy makers, and they execute government contracts, stepping into a role otherwise reserved for civil servants. This class partners with the Adiuvans Foundation (http://www.adiuvans.org/) to study issues of food insecurity and food justice in the local community, assess the work of nonprofits in this space, and award $100,000 in grants to support efforts to improve food security and justice. **This class will directly investigate policies and the selective implementation of policy that disproportionately impacts people of color. We will investigate what anti-racist policy would look like in form and in practice with respect to food insecurity, food justice, and our social welfare system. |
