This seminar will explore policies and practices in the K-12 and higher education spaces that either help increase or act as barriers in the pursuit of opportunity. The course will look at high schools and colleges as critical drivers of diversity, equity, inclusion, and mobility. Topics will include college costs/financial aid, advising, college admissions, and how policies/practices create postsecondary pathways for students to navigate.
 Violence, Gender & Humanitarian Assistance
20580 002Lecture (3)Open20 / 40Jeanne WardMo 3:30pm - 6:00pmWeb-Based Course
This course will examine key issues, policies, and interventions related to one of the most complex protection and human rights concerns in humanitarian settings: gender-based violence (GBV). Taught by an international expert with 20 years’ experience working on GBV globally, the course will review the scope of violence that women and girls face in conflicts and disasters around the world, as well as the humanitarian structures and programming models that have evolved to address this violence. With a focus on real-life issues and practical knowledge building, the course will not only improve students’ understanding of GBV in humanitarian crises, but also invite students to engage in critical reflection about current challenges and key debates in the GBV field. The course will include presentations by guest lecturers as well as opportunities for students to participate (alongside GBV professionals) in real-time online learning available through humanitarian GBV coordination mechanisms and communities of practice.

In this five-week practice lab, students will gain skills in Nonviolent Communication (NVC) useful for the resolution of all types of conflict. The basic tools include learning to observe without judgment, to notice the feelings and needs being expressed, and to learn to make effective requests. We will apply NVC both to social justice issues, conflicts, and our own lives. After learning the fundamental language of NVC conflict resolution, we will study the values of some great nonviolent thinkers such as Gandhi and King. We will draw all these resources into workshops on ongoing social issues.

The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed serious weaknesses within existing food systems and due to that realization and current status of the SDG 2030 agenda, the Secretary General of the United Nations announced in July 2020 that a major summit on food systems would be convened in 2021. While this summit is scheduled to occur formally in September of next year, there will also be opportunities for a series of “dialogues” to occur earlier, one of which will be the basis for the Food Policy Clinic on “Food Systems and Reform” offered at Batten in the Spring Semester, 2021.
