Taught by an international expert with 20 years’ experience working on GBV globally, the course will review the scope of violence that women and girls face in conflicts and disasters around the world, as well as the humanitarian structures and programming models that have evolved to address this violence. With a focus on real-life issues and practical knowledge building, the course will not only improve students’ understanding of GBV in humanitarian crises, but also invite students to engage in critical reflection about current challenges and key debates in the GBV field. The course will include presentations by guest lecturers as well as opportunities for students to participate (alongside GBV professionals) in real-time online learning available through humanitarian GBV coordination mechanisms and communities of practice.

After learning the fundamental language of NVC conflict resolution, we will study the values of some great nonviolent thinkers such as Gandhi and King. We will draw all these resources into workshops on ongoing social issues.

The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed serious weaknesses within existing food systems and due to that realization and current status of the SDG 2030 agenda, the Secretary General of the United Nations announced in July 2020 that a major summit on food systems would be convened in 2021. While this summit is scheduled to occur formally in September of next year, there will also be opportunities for a series of “dialogues” to occur earlier, one of which will be the basis for the Food Policy Clinic on “Food Systems and Reform” offered at Batten in the Spring Semester, 2021.

Risks of Managing a Public Company
20756 009SEM (1)Open14 / 20Russell HorwitzFr 2:00pm - 4:30pmWeb-Based Course
CEOs and the companies they lead are subject to extraordinary pressures — driven by a more aggressive, politically volatile and low-margin-for-error operating environment. The consequences of not anticipating potential problems or not reacting quickly and thoughtfully enough to emerging issues have never been higher. Congressional, regulatory and legal risk is only increasing as the government responds to the anger and distrust directed at institutions. In fact, public confidence in institutions is at its lowest point since Gallup began polling the question in 1973. At the same time, expectations of how companies conduct themselves in the normal course of their business relative to broader social issues like climate change, income inequality, racial equity, gun control, immigration, etc, only grows. This class will explore two central questions: First, how does a public company manage through reputational scrutiny, or worse, a company specific crisis? Second, how does a company meet the higher societal expectations of its role and responsibilities, and in the process, demonstrate differentiating positioning and behavior? In both cases, we will discuss the lessons, including related to leadership, from recent cases of high profile companies.

This course is designed to help students attack complex and ambiguous problems like a strategy consultant. The immersive, case-based course will give students the skills and confidence to navigate complex business problems and facilitate discussion around the psychology of decision making in teams. During this program, students will learn a hypothesis driven structured problem-solving approach used by many top strategy consulting firms and apply this approach to mock case interviews and a live consulting project with a real-world client. Paired with the Career Center’s Propel Project-based learning program, students will have the opportunity to apply their problem-solving skills to a case provided by a real-world client. During the project, each student team will be assigned an alumni mentor who currently works in consulting that will serve as a coach throughout the course and project. The capstone event of the course is a final case competition where teams of students present their strategic analysis and recommendations to a group of alumni leaders.

This course is designed to acquaint students with the fundamentals of national grand strategy - that is, with the political uses of military power and the respective roles of military and civilian leaders in formulating and implementing foreign policy. We explore various approaches to American foreign policy and apply them to historical cases like the Vietnam War and the Iraq War. Fair warning: we read and debate alot!
