| | This course examines the past, present, and future of war, focusing especially on conventional deterrence theory and its applicability to contemporary American foreign policy. We will begin with a thorough review of existing theory, proceeding chronologically from deterrence theory before Hiroshima through the Cold War and Global War on Terror. We will then critically examine the applicability of conventional deterrence theory to contemporary American foreign policy and defense strategy. In particular, we will focus on the value of existing theory to the contemporary strategic environment, as well as the extent to which conventional deterrence theory affects American strategic decisions regarding force sufficiency, posture, and readiness. |
